Athletic Council Overview
The Athletic Council is an advisory body consisting of faculty,
staff, students, and alumni representatives. The eighteen member
Council is composed of eight faculty members, three alumni representatives,
three student representatives, four ex officio members (Director
of the Alumni Association, Vice President of Operations, Director
of Athletics, and Faculty Athletic Representative). The MSU Athletic
Council is composed of four subcommittees: Academics and Compliance,
Budgeting and Operations, Equity and Strategic Planning, and Drug
Education and Testing. The Athletic Council advises the Athletics
Director, and university administration, on matters of policy, procedures,
and organization related to Intercollegiate Athletics.
Background Information
The MSU Athletic Council began as a Board of Trustee established
committee. In 1995 the bylaws of the Council were revised and first
appeared in the MSU Bylaws for Academic Governance. The Athletic
Council is involved with academic and fiscal integrity, governance
and compliance issues, and student-athlete welfare matters related
to the conduct of a Big 10 and NCAA Division I-A intercollegiate
athletics program. The complex nature of athletic issues, coupled
with a broad range of constituencies, renders athletics a unique
University enterprise. Athletics is an integral part of the University
and the Athletic Council is delegated the responsibility of maintaining
its proper place and perspective. The MSU Athletic Council normally
meets once per month during the regular academic year.
